I'M Rex R. Deloney, the colorist!

My artwork is focused on storytelling, symbolism, and spirituality. My goal is to reach the you, the viewer emotionally and spiritually by creatively using color to awaken perceptual triggers in your memory. I like to employ visually thick words, phrases, or quotes to create imagery symbolizing the hopes, dreams, and struggles of the African American Culture. My artistic career began as a sports illustrator and a commercial artist in the Pacific Northwest. My sports painting were published in Beckett Football and Basketball magazines in the mid to late 1990's. I moved back home to Little Rock, Arkansas in 2004. Since then, my work has been focused on using a colorful palette to paint portraits and figurative mixed media paintings. My work can be found in several galleries and private collections in the United States.

Inspiration

I draw artistic inspiration from the expressive figurative work of Ernie Barnes, the bold, colorful palette of William Tolliver, and the masterful compositional brilliance of Charles White

Techniques

I employ a technique called abstract realism. First, I create colorful mixed media abstract backgrounds. I then paint portraits or figurative works on top of these colorful backgrounds. I intentionally use bold colors for portrayal of my subjects rather than realistic colors to heighten the emotional impact.
